The History of Golf in The Usa

Golf in America is considered the best in the world. They have many of the best golf courses, and a good number of the top ranked golfers are in the US. The history of golf in the US dates back to the late 19th century as the first US golf courses were established.

Among the first golf courses was the Oakhurst Golf Club which had some of the first golf holes in the US. Today, the oldest golf course in the USA is that of Foxburg Country Club, a 9-hole public course in Pennsylvania opened in 1887. This golf course was designed by Joseph Fox, an American who had visited St Andrews, and aimed to bring the game to America. The golf course itself is America’s home of golf.

The first Major to begin in the US was that of the US Open. The US Open began in 1895 at the Newport Country Club of Rhode Island. The first winner of this golf championship was an English golfer, and it was not until 1911 that J McDermott became the first US golfer to win the US Open.

PGA professional golf in America began in 1916 when the PGA of America was founded. The PGA of America was founded by Robert White. It also marked the beginning of the PGA Championship which was first won by Jim Barnes.

During the 1920s American and Great Britain golf teams played against each other in a match-play format. The seed-merchant Samuel Ryder was in attendance at such a golf championship, and was convinced to help better establish a bi-annual match-play championship between US and British golfers. This began in 1927 as the Ryder Cup when the US team won their first Ryder Cup.

The last of the four Majors was established during the 1930s. With the opening of the Augusta National golf course in Georgia the US Masters was first staged as the Augusta Invitational in 1934. This was then later renamed to the US Masters.

In the post-war era the TV coverage of the Major golf championships began. CBS began such coverage at the US Open.

The 1960s was a golden era for US golf as some great US golfers emerged. Palmer was one such who was the top ranked US golfer in the late ’50s and early ’60s. However, the emergence of Nicklaus saw the Majors of the ’60s keenly contested, particularly at the Masters. Nicklaus would go on to win a record 18 Majors with the final win at Augusta during the 1980s.

The emergence of Woods in the 1990s saw another great US golfer win their first Major titles. In the 2000s Woods started to dominate the golf Majors, winning all four of the Majors in a row. With such dominance Woods has remained at the top of the golf rankings since, and won 14 Majors in total.

So today, golf in America is one of the nations favourite sports with most of the golf championships of the PGA Tour in the USA. US golfers dominate the sport, and like baseball America considers the game to be one of their own. From Pebble Beach in California, to Augusta National golf course in Georgia, golf is America’s sport.

A set of professional golf clubs is broken into various segments. There are the golf woods, golf irons, golf wedge, and the golf putter. But golf gear takes a while to become accepted by a pro golfer and there is a ritual that many pro golfers go through before they will even try new professional golf equipment.

Probably the most sensitive of all professional golf equipment is the putter. A professional golfer will go so far as to blame their putter for their bad play in tournaments and buy a new putter at the pro shop prior to a round in the tournament and just start using that brand new putter in tournament play. While this goes against the notion of breaking golf gear in, it shows how important feel and confidence is to the golfer when it comes to their equipment.

Even though many professional golfers get their golf equipment for free they will still refuse professional golf equipment if they cannot get it to feel right or if it does not help their golf game. Some golfers change equipment every season and some change it every month but there is no doubt that golfers and their pro golf equipment have a strange relationship.

The first thing a golfer looks for in their professional golf equipment is the feel. When they pick the club up it needs to feel comfortable in their hands or they would not use it. Comfortable means that not only does the grip feel comfortable but the clubs are the proper length and that they have the right weight to them. Golf is such a game of feel that if the clubs do not feel right then everything is going to be off.

Almost every professional golfer has a long list of superstitions and rituals that they attach to their professional golf gear and no piece of equipment has more ritual than the golf ball. For most golfers if the golf ball is not their preferred brand, in their preferred color, and their preferred model of their preferred brand then they would not even look at them. Some will even go as far as to insist that the numbers on the golf balls all be the same or they would not use them. There is a lot of truth to the statement that a lot of the game of golf is mental and some of that mental is very strange.
